From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)

Last night, Bruce Springsteen headlined Day 2 of the Glastonbury Festival, in large part due to the above Joe Strummer-penned fax.  Sure, the fax is 15 years old and was written by a guy who’s been gone for half that time, but the important thing is that this missive was used by Glasto organizer Emily Eavis to convince others to let the quintessentially American Boss headline the mother of all English rock & roll faires.

Bruce returned the favor by opening last night’s set with Joe & the Mescaleros’ summer festival-inspired “Coma Girl”.  Not sure about you, but Springsteen & Strummer’s mortality-defying mutual love-fest just warms the cockles of our little heart.  And yet another reason why we miss Joe – he’d probably have been up there himself last night were he not, you know, dead.

Here’s Bruce, Little Steven, Elvis Costello, and the ubiquitous Dave Grohl (along with bassist Tony Kamal from No Doubt and Attraction Pete Thomas on drums) paying tribute to the former John “Woody” Mellor shortly after his untimely passing and providing by far the coolest moment in Grammy history:

UPDATE: As if on cue, Bruce opened his show in Hyde Park tonight with “London Calling”.
