Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine

Apparently, one of the highlights at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Tom DiCillo’s Doors doc When You’re Strange, which features a treasure trove of previously unreleased footage and hopfully no consecutive usage of the words “lizard” and “king”.  Ray Manzarek says this will right Oliver Stone’s wrongs, though didn’t Ray consult on The Doors?  Regardless, a happy belated 70th to everyone’s favorite bass keyboardist and purveyor of the myth.

Anyway, look for a screening at SXSW and a theatrical release once Johnny Depp finishes redubbing the narration.  The trailer will have to hold you over until then:

And speaking of documentaries about dead guys, whe the hell are we going to get a chance to get a DVD release of 2006′s Who Is Harry Nilsson… (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)? This has to be the coolest, most tantalizing trailer ever made - dig:

Another doc that’s currently on the festival circuit and looks absolutely ace is The Wrecking Crew, about the group of top L.A. session musicians who operated under the same name.  Tell me this isn’t the greatest movie soundtrack ever – even better is that it represents approximately .05% of what these people actually played on.  From the Herb Alpert and Henry Mancini to the Beach Boys and the Monkees, they don’t come much hipper than this:

Of course, no L.A.-centric rock film fest would be complete without Love Story, the long-overdue portrait of Arthur Lee & Love, finally available on DVD.  This is a must-see.  Featuring Arthur’s final interviews as well as current and archival footage of the rest of the Love/Da Capo/Forever Changes-era band (Alban “Snoopy” Pfisterer is the scene-stealer, believe me) as well as luminaries like Jac Holzman and Bruce Botnick, Love Story is essential viewing for any fan of the band, the ’65-’66 Sunset Strip scene, or Los Angeles musical and cultural history in general.  It’s that fucking good.  Check out the extra-long trailer:

Now when the hell are they going to make a Zevon doc?
