MILO GOES TO… FENWAY?

Punk rock and the mass media have always have always been pretty weird bedfellows, from the Today Show covering the Sex Pistols’ U.S. tour to the infamous punk rock episode of Quincy to… well, that was about it until Iggy’s having had it in the ear before somehow equated Caribbean cruises. So you can imagine my surprise when, while listening to the Red Sox/Brewers game on the radio a couple of weeks ago, the bumper music coming back from commercial was opening riff to the Descendents’ “Silly Girl”.

Keep in mind, the Descendents were punk rock at it’s absolute geeky zenith. They weren’t hipsters – far from it. They were the guys singing about the asshole jocks in high school, the girls who wouldn’t look at them, fast food, farting, fishing, and their SAT scores – which makes the irony of this rock/jock juxtaposition even more mind-bending. Hell, the lyrics to “Silly Girl” are literally on par with the Archies’ “Sugar Sugar” in the tooth decay department – the one saving grace is that Milo & Co. wear their bleeding hearts on their sleeves and there’s nothing cynical or contrived about it. It’s also really, really fast. And more importantly, it goes without saying that the surf-metal riff in question sounds absolutely fantastic over the AM dial, just as all great riffs do.

So there you go – Milo Aukerman seamlessly transitioning into Manny Ramirez. It shouldn’t work but it does.

Enjoy some liveage from 1987, all:
