Song Of The Day – 3.25.08
The Standells – “Dirty Water” (Tower/Capitol)
Garage rock classic. Proto-punk anthem. Nugget among Nuggets. Hymn to the Hub from a bunch of Sunset Strip hipsters. Timeless salute to “fuggers” everywhere (but they’re cool people). Probably the coolest song of the coolest year for music – 1966 – ever.
Some trivia: drummer Dick Dodd was a Mousketeer, keyboardist Russ Tamblyn is brother to Larry Tamblyn (West Side Story, Twin Peaks) and uncle to Amber Tamblyn (Joan Of Arcadia), and songwriter Ed Cobb was one of the Four Preps and also wrote “Tainted Love”.
Anyway, play it loud and marvel at Dodd’s lip-synching skills.
And happy Opening Day, everyone!
